Ubuntu 9.10 & yWriter5

So I basically upgraded to 9.10 in my sleep last night :-p

I found out there’s a “linux version” of yWriter5 and decided to try to out.  I had 9.04 installed but was having problems with text in the program and menus not showing up, despite a few hours of wrestling, installing, reinstalling according to the directions on Spacejock’s website.

I read that people with 9.10 were having the same problem… there was more people with the problem than -not- with the problem.  But I figured I’d upgrade anyway.  Lo and behold, I can use yWriter again! It’s the best writing program I’ve seen by far.  It used to be really buggy but here’s to hoping it won’t be any longer.

In My Dreams I’m Too Tall to Drown

Finished! And for sale.

One of my funky cats (calling them that for now) painted gold, standing in water and… not drowning :-p  On some random chunk of wood I found.  Good times.

On gamer girls

So this lovely gal right over yonder has gained some spotlight just because she plays games -and- has boobs.  This has been boggling my mind.  She must live in an area where any sorts of females are rare? I don’t know.

I know I’ve been out of the eye of gaming for several years, but what the fuck? What have I missed over the last several years? I’ve noticed we’ve been growing in the video gaming corner of the gaming world but other than that, I haven’t taken much notice to gamer girls.

I step back into the gaming world (i.e. gtfo of a small ass redneck nowhere town) and I’m greeted by a small handful of board/card gamer chicks and I see one or two chicks playing mini wargames.  I also don’t put much thought beyond this and… have no need to write any special articles about them or anything.  Nobody has offered to write any articles about me.

So the point of this post?

wait… I never have points…

*quick thinking*

Um! Gamer girls! Get over ‘em.  Come on guys… do you really want your girl up in your game all the time? You may be one of those people that like to have time away from her.  You all need different hobbies.  And if you keep up with this pussy-on-the-gamer-pedestal, you’re going to start either driving some away (think of how many girl gamers are hiding away from you fucks) or start giving them a complex.

Bad boy.

And a life lesson: If you’re a hot gamer girl, you’ll get more attention than, say… me.  :-p

With all that said (probably reading not at all as I intended), I feel sorely out of the loop.  While I was living in Grants Pass, I rarely left the house for recreational purposes, was either stuck on computers that couldn’t handle the latest games and even if they could, I couldn’t afford said games and I didn’t even know about the board/card gaming world out there.  As far as board games go, I thought there were just games like Monopoly and Sorry.  I have a shit ton of Magic: The Gathering cards but have yet to find anybody to play with me, even now that I’m in Eugene again.

I do have Ryan to thank for pulling me back to what I’ve missed all this time.  After tossing a few dice around at the local gaming store, I’ve been a bit happier.  And after starting some TTRPG with Crowley, it’s filled even more lost forgotten-about voids.

Fuck yeah, so glad I’m back on the gaming scene.

(no, I don’t care that this was a rambly, pointless post)

Roleplay night

So Wednesday nights for the last 2ish months at our house has been Roleplay night.  Crowley is the storyteller (World of Darkness, Werewolves specifically).  I’m playing a Kitsune, using the Hengeyokai book I bought years ago when I was a willing furry.  I’m no fan of wolves by a long shot, so I’m very glad I bought that book.

My character it Azami and I’m not really feeling her.  Totally not getting into the groove.  I thought I was when I picked a nature and demenor, but I guess not.  I’ve been trying -really- hard to fit the part, but it largely goes unnoticed when I think I think I’ve been doing well.  I’d even go so far as to say I out performed myself last night… but noooo.  >.<

That aside, it has been a fun story so far and I’ve been having loads of fun.  I missed roleplaying :)

Thunderstone!

A couple days ago I mentioned trying to learn to play Thunderstone.  Last night at gaming night I finally learned it!

I keep hearing that if you like Dominion, you’ll prefer Dominion over Thunderstone and if you’ve only played Thunderstone, you’ll prefer it over Dominion.  Fuck that, I really like both games.  If I had a Christmas list, both would be on it.  I look forward to playing it again.
So the objective, as always, is to get victory points.  You do this by beating monsters.  You have 3 monsters to choose from, each at a different “light” level.  The light level is sort of like a difficulty level.

Every card in your hand has a gold value on it.  So you can either add up all the gold value, buy something from the market and discard your hand like you would in Dominion, or try to beat a monster.  You can buy hero cards which have different special things about them, and you can buy weapons.  You can attach the weapons to the heroes if they’re strong enough for the weapon (one each).  So weapon cards, hero cards and other special cards have “strength” to them.  You add up to strength to see if you have enough to beat the strength number on the monster card.

It was confusing as fuck at EGG but once I got to sit down with someone who knew the game, by the time it was my turn in the first round, I knew what I was duing.  Even if it didn’t seem like it because I missed some special rule on one of the monster cards once :-p

The monsters are interesting.  It’s not a simple “Oh look, I have 10 strength, I can so beat that light 1 monster at strength 8.”  If you don’t have a light card in your hand, or enough light to beat the monster you’re going after, it makes it harder to beat.  Some monsters will half your attack if you’re attacking with magic, some you can’t attack with an edged weapon.  There is one that will deplete each of your heroes of 4 strength.  So there’s some thought put behind it and luck of the draw for your cards is a big deal.  Sometimes you can only buy a card.

When you beat a monster you get XP points (which are just XP cards).  The monsters tell you how much XP you get.  You use your XP to upgrade your heros.  Yes… you can upgrade your heros.  Awesome :)

The end of the game is determined by the “Thunderstone” card which is placed in the monster/dungeon deck.  It’s placed within the last 10 cards.  When it comes up and you defeat a monster next to the Thunderstone card, the game ends.  Those with the most XP from characters wins!

I lost pathetically, but it was great fun.

What’s awesome about it? Quick to learn when you’re in the right hands.  It has a lot of replay value because of the many different types of monsters, heroes and other card types.  The theme… I love fantasy, so the theme makes me happy in my pants.  The artwork is juice and pleasing to the eye.  I -love- the idea of earning XP and upgrading a hero.  And I love that its a deck building game, like Dominion.

What sucks about it? That I don’t own it :(

Eugene Gamer’s Gala 2010

To celebrate (or morn) the loss of my webhosting, I’m opening my blog here on the WordPress site with a posting about Eugene’s Gamer Gala.

It was great fun! I made a new friend, recognized 2 faces from Evolution gaming and learned a new game.

First played Carcassone with Ryan and my new buddy, Bob. I lost pathetically.

Then wandered around and watched some gaming… then played Ticket to Ride with Bob and some other guy that was actually younger than me. I really like that game :) I lost pathetically.

Then I wandered around a bit more… went upstairs to make sure the bar was still intact ;-)

Came back down and got in on a board game called… Marind? I think? With Bob, Carry’s cute jerkface girlfriend Anna and some guy’s name I forget. I liked it! I have ideas of how to play better next time ’cause…. I lost pathetically.

Played a nice relaxing round of Dominion with Bob. I won.

Umm… Bob and I tried to learn how to play Magic Stone, I think it’s called, which is similar to Dominion. We were overwhelmed doing it on our own, even after the owner of the game kindly explained it to us (and left to attend some other game). And then we ran screaming back to good ol familiar Dominion. I lost pathetically.

I didn’t know it was a three day event, otherwise I would have brought a sleeping bag on hour 1 of day 1 :-p

Ok, I give up

I have scrambled around for months trying to make sure I’ll be able to pay my webhosting.  My due date is coming up and I’ve got $20 to put towards it, which is from my dad.  His contribution for me hosting him.  I’ll be sad that I won’t be able to host him but… eh.  Oh, and Dale has yet to give me the money he said he would give me, but even with that in hand, I won’t have enough.

Even knowing that DreamHost couldn’t give two shits about expiration dates, I’m sure I wouldn’t have the money on hand to pay for it when they finally did decide to cut the cord on me.  And even if I -did- have the money on hand (like I magically came up with a job), I wouldn’t put it towards something as frivolous as a god damn webhost (no matter how totally ridiculously awesome they are).  Of course I would plan on returning all money given to me for hosting back to their respective owners, but yeah.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned about being pathetically broke and stuck without 96% of my belongings for an extended period of time, it’s how to appreciate the simple things in life, and how to live without all the extra things.  I knew the former before, but not so much the latter.

Yes, it’s nice to have a webhost.  Very nice.  But to have to stress about how to pay for it? Not having that extra stress on my shoulders is going to be really nice and so worth it.  Like if I managed to pay my hosting for this year, I’d have to worry for a full year for the next year.

I.  Do.  Not.  Need.  That.

I still have 7+ months left for my domain name.  I’ll use that name to forward to… probably my deviantArt account, since most of what I do is random blogging and posting of art stuffs.

I would like to perhaps get a dA subscription, which is super cheap.  I could get a full year and not worry too much about it’s due date because I’ll still have my dA account.  I just won’t have the axtra little perks… really there’s only one perk I like and think is totally awesome.  And probably worth it, especially since that account would basically become my stomping ground.

You see? I can be a simple person.  Yes, lots of stuff I want… gimme gimme gimme! But I can be a sport and live without it and just focus on the essentials and the stuff that I know really truly makes me happy.  Like making art.  And the outdoors.  And gaming.

It’s funny the things that have made me stupidly happy while being completely broke all the time.  Like… being given furniture.  Like toilet paper.  And especially stuff to clean with.  The little things, yes?

With all that said… this will probably be my last “normal” blog post.  All blogging from here on out will probably be on my dA account.  In the next couple days I’ll start backing up my entire site.  I’ll let my dad know so he can start backing his stuff up too, and maybe point him towards WordPress’ blogging sites.

I am very disheartened that nobody could/is willing come to my aid.  Seriously? These times are tough :(

Funky Cat Studio wants to host you!

I’m looking to host a few people… get your own .com or .net and tons of space and bandwidth for $30 a year ^-^ Leave me a comment if you’re interested.

On another note: EVERYTHING ELSE!

I’ve been trying to ride my bike lately.  But it seems like things keep getting in the way.  Like rain.  And sleeping too late.  I did end up going on a walk to a local park (2 freaking blocks away and it took me a year to check it out!), to scope out some nice walking areas and bike riding opportunities… so plans -are- in motion.  Also: I’m so going to plant one or more letterboxes there.

I’ve been gaming at Evolution Gaming every Tuesday.  FUN.  I’ve been having FUN.  Oodles of it! MORE FUN THAN I HAVE ROOM FOR!  Moar specifically on the gaming aspect, I’ve got a handsome army of Necrons going on.  I put together a Monolith.  It makes me happy in my pants.

Spending lots of time with the boyfriend.  Oodles of aforementioned fun with him, too.

And I’ve been wanting to work on my resume.  And my novel.  But I just haven’t been able to.  My ability to focus is pathetic.  I probably have some sort of sick strain of writer’s block and resume/job searching is depressing and hopeless.

Been doing minimal amounts of artwork, both digital and traditional.  I’ve been getting floods of ideas for drawings/illustrations that I don’t have the ability to put out correctly.

I’ve been getting bits of poetry/song lyrics trickling in.

Doing a little bit of pioning… working on a song Whity started.

Also playing a tiny bit with “music composition” in XMMS.

Annd um.  Totally in love with Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood.  Totally want to check out the entirety of Fringe.

Totally read Alice in Wonderland and went O.O

Almost done reading the Twilight series.  Halfish way through with Breaking Dawn.  Good gods… it’s still rather painful but I think I’ve become numb to it to a small degree.  Next big reading project is Golden Compass.  I read the first book ages ago but haven’t read the other two.  Going to start with book 1.

Aaand I’ve been cutting back my caffeine intake.  I managed to go 4 days without coffee.  Then I went back to it for a couple days.  Then I managed to find a happy medium of only having 3 cups a week.  For my “off” days, I have a cup of tea.  Tea has just enough caffeine that it keeps withdrawal headaches away.

Also considering getting back into building websites.  Trying to get my hands on some PHP CSS materials.

P.S. Don’t eat moldy tempeh.  Unless… you have guts of steel.
